Oranges

Orange-Heirloom Heirloom Navel
We are convinced that by sustaining traditional cultural practices we are able to produce a navel orange with old time flavor and taste. Bud lines, rootstocks and terrior all play a role in how oranges taste. Our Heirloom Navel Oranges are grown on "old line" Washington Navel trees, combined with the appropriate sour or sweet rootstock and soil profile. This combination along with our "sustainable" farming practices produces a truly memorable tasting piece of fruit. We haven’t come up with anything new in growing our Heirloom Navels, we are just farming them they way it was done 100 years ago. Sometimes new and improved is not as good as the original.

Orange-Cara_Cara Cara Cara
This wonderfully pink navel orange has a sweet taste with a spicy tang that will delight you from the first bite through the last. As you eat a Cara Cara don’t be surprised if you taste the richness of fresh berries. Most often people identify the flavor with those of raspberries and strawberries. The blush pink flesh is due to the presence of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to lowered risk levels of cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration. Although the Cara Cara is a relatively new variety (discovered in Venezuela in 1976) we farm the trees using traditional methods, which we know leave a softer footprint.

Orange-Moro_Blood Moro Blood
It is said that you eat first with your eyes so we like to consider the sight of a Moro Blood Orange as your first course. The cherry-raspberry inspired flavors of this deeply colored orange are sure to please. This orange is originally from Italy where it is known as aranca rossa and often described with just 3 words: agro, acre and dolce (sour, acid and sweet). We just call it good! Moros are prized for their dark, juicy flesh and deep pigmentation which permeates the rind giving it a blush. The deep coloration is due to Anthocyanins which are also found in cherries, blueberries, cranberries and many other healthful foods.

Orange-Tarocco

Tarocco Sicilian type Blood Orange
If a trip to Italy isn’t in your future, at least you can eat like an Italian. The Tarocco is considered by many to be Italy’s finest orange variety and among the best of the Mediterranean fruit. Our Taroccos are planted in a heavy soil in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It has been our experience that this particular soil profile produces the most flavorful citrus.

You will find this orange to be rich and fragrant with a juicy flavor reminiscent of raspberries. It is something special to be enjoyed fresh, juiced or used in cooking.

Orange-Seville Seville Sour
The highly acidic flesh of this attractive orange has a very distinctive bitterness which makes it superior for marmalades but far too sour for fresh eating. Seville’s are used commercially in the production of liqueurs, orange flower water, perfumes and rind oils. A classic Cuban mojo or marinade is made with equal parts of sour orange and olive oil, along with garlic and onion. The fruit is a very attractive golden orange color, medium in size with many seeds.

Orange-Bergamot Bergamot
Don’t be afraid of this special variety, they are a very versatile fruit. Bergamots are very juicy and acidic with few seeds; they can be used to add nuances to any recipe that calls for sour orange or lemon juice. The rind oil of Bergamots has a unique aroma and is beautifully perfumed, making it an important component of the tea and perfume industries. Italy grows the majority of the world’s commercial Bergamot supply, but we have had good success in California by planting them on warm sun soaked southern slopes.

Sweet Mountain™ Valencia
This sweet flavored JUICY orange is often referred to as the summer orange because it matures from February to October. Valencia’s are excellent juice oranges that develop good color, with a thin slightly pebbly rind. The flesh has outstanding color, good flavor and very high juice content. You will find our Sweet Mountain Valencia’s to be much sweeter than Valencia’s that you will typically find at your market. The trees are planted in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley’s citrus belt, in a highly prized area that is known for the quality of the fruit it produces. The rind may re-green without diminishing the quality of the fruit.
